Our History

It all started when…

As a high school student, Olga Lloyde worked with small children and developed a bond with several families.  After her freshman year of college, she organized a small group of families and hosted the first ever Learning for Liberation Summer Camp.  The small group of four boys and their families would bond together for a life time. Olga would rotate from house to house for two weeks at a time.  The children would begin the day with an uplifting morning opening and proceed during the day to learn many culturally focused lessons.  Each week the group engaged in field trips and swimming.  The first camp was held in 1993 and each of the seven weeks focused on one principle of the Nguzo Saba.  Learning for Liberation would go on to host summer camps for several years.

In December of 2012, Learning for Liberation began hosting parenting workshops & playdates.  Expecting parents and parents of very young children gathered in the home of Ms. Lloyde to discuss ideas that centered on raising children well.  Learning from each other and sharing resources and ideas became a true benefit for each family.  Learning for Liberation bought in guest speakers and learned from experts about the overall health, well being, and education of our children.  The families who participated in these workshops are still in contact today.

In 2020, Learning for Liberation is bringing together all the groups and ideas of the past to launch a new platform! We are excited about what the future will hold!
