Let the community tell the stories …
Words from Wanda Burt,an original Learning for Liberation Camp parent
As a past parent of Learning For Liberation, it was imperative that I found meaningful avenues to supplement my then 3-4-year-old son’s learning and development. It was so important to me that he had fun while building on his self-esteem and learning. What he took away from Learning For Liberation has had a lasting and powerful impact on his life as a black boy and now as a man. He,to this day, still talks about it and speaks very fondly of that experience!
It was Olga’s knowledge, insight and amazing dedication to building pride and being deliberate in the education of our black sons that has always impressed and encouraged me as a mother. She not only educated our sons, through language skills, reading, math and Black History, she elevated the parent’s knowledge as well. She always had a book or an author and many articles to share or recommend. Many were to enlighten and prepare us parents on the bias of America’s traditional education system, as it relates to the disparities in education and particularly for our sons. What I learned as a parent with our involvement in the Learning 4 Liberation Summer Camp is invaluable. Little did I know then as a first time mother, that was the start as a parent, advocating for my children throughout their matriculation.
I am so proud of that young woman, that high school senior who had a vision and a goal to make a difference, to change the paradigm and trajectory or our boys. Olga in her wisdom stepped up (stood in the gap) as a champion for our children, our babies and single handedly filled them with joy, pride and self-esteem that continues to this day to carry them successfully through their adult lives.
“Each one teach one”
That is Learning for Liberation - Wanda Burt
Good Morning or Habari Gani!!! As we would say when I was enrolled in Learning for Liberation.
I want to first start out by thanking Ms. Lloyde for the lessons, the confidence, and the self determination she instilled in me. Secondly, thank you all for bringing this empowering program back for today’s youth.
Before I would ever step foot into a 1st grade classroom I was well educated. I was equipped with knowledge of self, understanding of the world around me, and the history of my culture. Through African language, song & dance Learning for Liberation gave me something no other institution has matched to this day, and thats pride. Pride in myself and my community.
Learning for Liberation is a fun and refreshing way to educate black youth on their past as well as prepare them for their future.
Thank you, Sean Burt
Learning for Liberation has been a tremendous blessing.
It’s been amazing to have a welcoming space to connect with other moms with similar interests in making certain that we mitigate the risk of an achievement gap for our children. Our sessions have been invigorating; we share best practices, ideas and collectively work to provide a myriad of enrichment activities for our children, irrespective of grade level. Olga has been a phenomenal mentor and confidant; and, I appreciate not only her educational expertise that she brings but her true passion and endearing spirit that is centrally focused on the development and academic enrichment of our children.
